Cultivating a pool of highly effective teachers and leaders is critical to improving school performance and preparing students for the future. REL Appalachia has recognized this connection and is working to identify the factors that contribute to the departure and retention of quality teachers, especially in rural districts, and the role of professional development and professional learning communities.
The rural nature of much of the REL Appalachia region makes it difficult to hire and retain qualified teachers and administrators. In addition, the anticipated growing demand for rigorous courses further requires the hiring and retention of qualified teachers and administrators. These circumstances make it all the more crucial for the REL states to ensure sufficient and equitable access to both qualified instructional leaders and teachers.
