REL Appalachia serves the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, and the 6,351 public schools, 199,877 teachers, and some 3.2 million students who call them home. More than one-third of the population lives in a rural community, among them nearly one million students. Of adults 25 years or older, nearly one-third possess a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Although much of each state is rural, REL Appalachia also serves sizable urban populations in cities such as Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; and Richmond, Virginia. REL Appalachia seeks to meet the unique needs of these diverse regions by working closely with our research alliances to conduct region-specific research, provide technical assistance, and disseminate evidence-based practices to help educators put new knowledge to work for students.
